8.  1986: drawing in the campsite (à la Article 3); the place becomes waterlogged in winter, hence the gumboots. Years before Gregoire used to visit Onrus(t) in the off-season to paint the sea, rocks and trees, on occasions with Jack Cope.
During the wettest winter recorded
(1953) we rented a house above the campsite where the Ampenbergers stayed in their caravan in which Iris painted me, aged six.

9  1990: a typical pose with his beloved Muggie, ready to go walking, gallivanting and talking, leaving Marie to clear, clean, begin to cook and prepare for visitors on whom she had to wait morning, afternoon and evening while he yacked forth to them. Gregoire in his studio was her only real respite.

10. 1999: showing Jack Cope (who had owned Eldorado next to Bosplasie) his new gallery and awards.
11. 1990's: in Marie's now established garden with the Rev. and Mrs Beyers Naude. Whether famous or not, everyone was accorded the same hospitality.

12.  1993: a “regular” man popping in at Gregoire's birthday gathering straight from work after dark, an artist who called his profession “worse than slaving in the salt mines of Siberia” and another who said “it's so leisurely”. Gregoire's Persiese pet is a tea-cosy he took to wearing for effect.

13. 1979: drinking Turkish coffee on the Rabies’ stoep; Jan is enchanted by the garden birds, Uys has lost interest in the topic, Marjorie is actually silent and Gregoire still talking!

14.  2005: a very frail old man with caregiver Christine who was on duty the night Gregoire died and phoned me, herself too frightened to go near him, his mouth and eyes open. Dealing with the immediate, the doctor, the undertakers, a distraught Christine, necessary calls and then the media and public remains a strangely special experience.
